Inside the beige metal box electrical impulses firing faster than a person can count interpret written instructions, saved to a magnetic platter. Letters flicker across its face and the color resolves to an image: a teal background against which are set a matrix of square icons. One of them resembles the letter "N": this is Netscape. First, you dial in. A modem inside the computer shrieks to life, filling the air with a cacophonous racket: the machine speaks to another machine far off somewhere, and the connection is established. Now you're one more node in the metastasizing behemoth called the Internet. Now you have access to the sum of human knowledge, rendered at 800x600, delivered at a fraction of the speed of light. There's hope. There's a kind of optimism that this great technology will unify, galvanize, and bring us together in ways that have not been witnessed since the advent of the telegraph. We had no idea. None, none at all, that the partitioning of our society would be so deeply exacerbated by giving everyone a voice, when mostly everyone shuts their ears to anything that they don't already believe. But for a brief moment it seemed like joining the world in fiberoptic and copper cables was a splendid idea. So let's enjoy the past that was and speculate about the better future that might have been, had we used this beautiful monster a little more selectively.

Not far from reality TBH in this 'let everyone have a go' culture (whether they suck or not...) They did this for real once on BGT and let someone who couldnt sing do a solo because they 'wanted to include everyone' and it cost them the audition. Lying to ppl about how good they are about something is cruel cause it just sets them up for ridicule and failure

I know this has been overstated but these truly were happier times.
